Exploring Life ArticlesHow Stoicism Will Help You Achieve Happiness
Have you ever tried to wonder why there are people who appear calm in the face of adversity? These are the same people whom you would normally attribute as having a calm disposition in life, giving them the impression that they have superior intellect. These people are what we would call as the stoics. Now stoicism is unlike other schools of philosophy that you may have encountered. It does not have the intricacies and subtle details of postmodernism or Marxism. Its goal is practicality instead of intellectual masturbation. It is very straightforward and can be of good use to the ordinary man. In a nutshell, stoicism advocates stability and calmness in the face of uncertainties in this planet. Stoicism, as a school of philosophy by Zeno of Citrium, is one of the most enduring because of its apt use even in this time and age. According to this school, destructive emotions rise from misjudgments. As you reach intellectual imperfection, you begin to waive away these emotions and start to achieve inner peace indiscernible to all. How you can achieve the state of stoicism vary from person to person, but in general, there's the theme of visualizing worst-case scenarios (such as health problems, a natural catastrophe, or financial ruin) in order to achieve what you already have in life. Visualizing these negative scenarios over and over again in your mind is not a manifestation of pessimism, but rather a preparation when they actually arrive. When they do, the mind and the heart are already prepared and have already achieved an inner peace that cannot be disturbed by such surprises. It can be remembered that during the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan just recently, the Japanese people have shown a calm and composed behavior that came off as admirable to the rest of the world. The Japanese have always been stoic people. Perhaps their experiences after the World War turned them into the calm people that they are now. If we want to be truly, genuinely happy, we should be calm in the face of adversity. Following the school of stoicism will help us achieve this state more than any material possession in the world.
