Putting an end to violation of women’s rights has been the battle cry of many feminists and women’s liberation advocates. Issues such as employment inequality, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, prostitution, rape, and many more are among the extreme realities plaguing women’s status in our society. Though civilization is getting more modern, for so many years up to this day, wife battering is still a reality in a number of Filipino homes at present. It is the leading means to domestic violence.

Many organizations have put their efforts to end this kind of violence through formation of women’s desk and women’s crisis centers, counseling groups, and many more. Today, women are becoming more aware of their rights and duties as wives. More women have also gained the guts to leave the once sacred and happy family homes to gain their liberation. However, as women survive in this struggle, the other part is left unattended – the men’s role in domestic violence.

Men in our old society had been pampered for ages. Men ought to be superior and should always exercise their superiority. They have the physical advantage over women, they carry the family name, and in childhood, they should be molded to be physically strong, tough and aggressive. An ideal man should have the macho image. They should not cry for it will make them look weak, and they should always appear to be in control of every situation and undaunted with every endeavor, even with their emotions.

Addressing the issue of domestic violence should not only focus on women’s awareness. Men should also be addressed. Maybe in that way, domestic violence would be lessened. Men should be ushered to resolve their internal conflicts without resorting to violence and other unhealthy diversions. They should realize that there is more to their manhood than their fists and sexuality. They have to realize that they also have a heart that is capable of compassion to the weaker being, including their own.

For the youngsters of today, they should be gradually taught of this kind of violence because they can become either the victim or the perpetrator of this kind of violence. Mild approach with these issues will help them understand and learn what is right and what is wrong. And you will instill to their minds that violence is bad and should not be tolerated and done at all.
